Established design and engineering workflows are about to go through radical changes, prompted by machine learning and AI-like algorithms that can suggest optimal design shapes based on user input.
Dubbed generative design, the new approach often results in shapes and forms that are structurally superior and aesthetically more appealing to the human designers’ solutions.
In this LIVE roundtable moderated by DE, panelists will discuss:

- The benefits and pitfalls of working with generative design;

Speakers
Keith Meintjes, Executive Consultant, Simulation and Analysis, CIMdata
Dr. Keith Meintjes is the coauthor of a paper titled “Generative Design Impacting Product Development,” published October 2018. He has over 30 years of experience in the development and application of simulation tools to transform product development. His achievements include novel methods for combustion simulation, patents for engine design, and strategic planning for the world’s largest commercial high-performance computing (HPC) facility.
He spent nearly 30 years at General Motors as part of GM’s Global CAE strategy team. He was named a Senior Technical Fellow. He is currently an analyst at CIMdata, a PLM consulting company.

Tony Abbey, DE columnist, FEA trainer
Tony Abbey is professional structural analyst with over 40 years’ experience using finite element analysis (FEA). He has given nearly 100 onsite training classes to a wide range of international clients, covering the full range of analysis disciplines, from dynamics to nonlinear analysis. For 10 years, he ran support and training groups for MSC.Software and NEi. He writes a monthly column for DE, covering many topical areas of CAE and also specialist articles exploring important fundamentals of FEA.
Carina Maurer, Product Designer
Carina Maurer is a product designer and a recent graduate from the school of design in Schwäbisch Gmünd where she conducted a study on generative design for her final thesis. The focus of the study was to find the impact of generative design on conventional design processes and if and how it could change design. She currently works at Britax Römer as a product designer, a manufacturer of strollers and child seats.
