Dell Product Launch Debuts Enhanced Workstations, More 

Dell Technologies recently offered a sneak peek via webcast of new products it is launching. Themes surrounding the late March kickoff included the hybrid work experience and sustainability in manufacturing, as product leadership detailed the specs and features of an array of products ranging from enhanced PCs to laptop docking stations to AI-based software.

“Technology has never been more important than it is today,” says Matt McGowan, director, mainstream commercial notebooks, of Dell Technologies. “The PC is the central point. It’s become especially important in this hybrid world that we’re living in. We’re seeing huge demand across the ecosystem of solutions that include software, devices in and around the PC, and services.

“As organizations look to give team members tools they need to work from anywhere … collaboration and connectivity are top of mind.” McGowan says. Dell Technologies is offering PCs and ancillaries that are “more intelligent, more collaborative, more secure.

“At the core of all of this is sustainability. We continue to work to reduce environmental impact,” McGowan adds.

The Precision 5470 mobile workstation was one of the big highlights of the product launch by Dell. While the 14-in. workstation is small and thin, but the company says it is built for power. Aligning with Precision’s 25th anniversary this year, the Precision  5470 laptop is based on the 12th Gen Intel Core H-series processor that is verified to meet the Intel Evo platform requirements and is based on the Intel vPro platform. It comes with up to 64GB of DDR5 memory, up to 4TB of storage and up to NVIDIA RTX A1000 graphics. 

Of note, the Precision 5470’s cooling system features a new thermal management system that fits within the compact system without any memory loss or lack of Thunderbolt ports. The 5470 has Dual Opposite Outlet fan technology to enable the system run at high speeds when working on complex workflows. A bonded hinge architecture was developed to enhance hot air exhaust.

For the display, the Precision 5470 has an immersive edge-to-edge 14-in. Infinity Edge display to see ideas more clearly in a compact footprint for mobile creators and engineers. The display has ComfortView Plus, a hardware-based low blue light filter that doesn’t eat up resources or alter true color.  

The Precision 5470 offers a high-speed Wi-Fi 6E connection and Dell Optimizer for Precision software. The AI-based software learns a user’s work habits and responds to unique needs, automatically enhancing application performance, battery runtime, audio settings and privacy. 

Specifically, it features: 

• New intelligent privacy features that dim the screen when a user glances away and allows concealment of sensitive information and projects when someone else is detected in view.
• The Precision 5470 has a simultaneous multi-network connection for faster data and video downloads.

Limited-Time Offer 

For the Precision workstation line, Dell is supporting professionals with training at no added cost. The company is bundling complimentary independent software vendor (ISV) professional software training for any new Precision workstation purchased in the U.S. Users can work on Adobe Creative Cloud applications, Maxon Cinema 4D, select Autodesk applications, Blackmagic Design Resolve and more. Trainings are virtual, live, interactive and instructor-led, with ISV certification of completion provided at the end.

Hybrid Workflow

The hybrid work experience gets a seat at the table at Dell, driving tweaks to product enhancements. 

Updates to Dell Technologies’ secure commercial PCs with built-in AI enable the company brand its product lines as the “anywhere devices.” Dell Technologies is adding to its portfolio of intelligent PCs, accessories, software and services to help cement hybrid work as a viable means to enhance the workforce.

“Hybrid work is no longer an afterthought or a privilege, it is the standard,” says Ed Ward, president, Client Product Group, Dell Technologies. “While employees are moving between locations to get work done, creating a productive experience is the priority. Our latest commercial portfolio continues to put collaboration, intelligence and security at the forefront, with increased investments that meet the diverse needs of people both today and in the future.”  

Out in front of its commercial product line that supports hybrid work sits the Dell Optimizer, an integrated AI software suite that powers intelligent PCs with built-in AI. It features privacy, connectivity and collaboration. 

Regarding connectivity, Dell Optimizer has a simultaneous multi-network connection that lets users connect to two wired or wireless networks at one time for faster data transfers and downloads. 

And in a move to enhance collaboration, especially in cases of online videoconferencing calls, Dell Optimizer now features enhanced neural-noise cancellation to sense the worker’s surroundings, and limit unneeded background noise for the user and others on the call.

Adds Mike Basore, senior director, Client Peripherals Product Group, Dell: “Whether working from office, working from home or people getting back on road, we are making sure we have the ecosystem out there to support that.”

Sustainability Baked into Products

Sustainability is more than a buzzword at Dell. 

“Sustainability is absolutely embedded into everything we do,” says Page Motes, head of global sustainability. “This isn’t new to us. We’re focused on delivering on our goal to deliver net zero.”

For a real-life example, Dell debuts its new Latitude 5000 series, touted as the company’s “most sustainable laptops yet.”

The Latitude 5000 series is Dell’s highest volume PC. The latest Latitude 5000 series features purposeful design choices to advance use of recycled and renewable content including:  a laptop lid built from 71% recyclable and renewable materials including tree-based bioplastic upcycled from the paper making industry (21%), reclaimed carbon fiber (20%) and post-consumer recycled plastic (30%). The base of the system is built with reclaimed carbon fiber (20%) and new bio-based rubber feet made from castor bean oil (39%). Similarly, rubber made from castor beans is also found in the bottom bumpers of the Latitude 7430 and 7530 and Precision 3000 series mobile workstations. This design choice is said to cut down on reliance on petroleum-based materials. 

The Latitude 5000 series features ocean-bound plastics in the fan housing (28%). Other lines also feature some level of ocean-bound plastics in fan housing: look for it in the fan housing in Dell’s Precision 3000 series mobile workstations, and in the fan and fan housing in Dell OptiPlex Micro desktops and Precision Workstations.

Protecting the product, the Latitude 5000 series comes in packaging made from 100% recycled or renewable materials, and this packaging is 100% recyclable.

These new materials join Dell’s already existing sustainable materials portfolio, which includes closed-loop and recycled plastics, reclaimed carbon fiber, aluminum produced with hydro power, bio-based plastics and closed-loop aluminum and rare earth magnets.

“All of this shows that sustainable can be sophisticated,” Motes says.
